Spook Central is a fantastic resource for Ghostbusters fans, featuring tons of great photos and scans of Ghostbusters related materials. Amongst the collection are scans of the model sheets from the Real Ghostbusters television series. These sheets are used as reference for the animation production crew.
Copies of these sheets appeared as interior case artwork for all five volumes in TimeLife’s The Real Ghostbusters: Complete Collection DVD box set, and were scanned in by Spook Central Webmaster/creator Paul Rudoff. A number of the prop sheets featured notes in Japanese. (Check out the original scans on Spook Central here: http://www.theraffon.net/~spookcentral/rgb_art.htm)
We reached out to Jack Spillum, one of the production coordinators on The Real Ghostbusters (who also speaks Japanese) and he agreed to translate the sheets back to English.
Jack was also able to give us a little background on the prop sheets:
“There are some lines that were borderline illegible but I think I got the jist of it all.
Those that were drawn in 1986 (and does not have the 1988 DIC copyright) were the ones I personally hand-xeroxed for the weekly animation shipments to Japan, oh-so many years ago. I had just joined the team and I spent much of the first several weeks just making copies of the design packs to Japan. The original ones had English instructions, so somebody must have white-outed them to create space for the Japanese translation.”
